Description
Hampi’s stone chariot is one of three most celebrated chariot temples in the country. It is famously known as the Jewel of Hampi. A UNESCO Heritage site located in Vijayanagara Karnataka, India, Hampi draws visitors in huge numbers. It used to be capital of the Vijayanagara kingdom. Persian, Portuguese and Russian travellers of the time have chronicled the awesome grandeur of Hampi. Incredibly, Hampi is also identified as the legendary Kishkindha (kingdom of the vanaras) in Ramayana, the revered Indian epic. Hampi’s stone chariot was built by King Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara who was inspired by the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa while fighting a war in the region.
